Take a look at this exciting new young adult action and adventure novel, The Student and the Slave, now available for purchase! This is the third book in the Krillonian Chronicles, after The Collar and the Cavvarach and The Gladiator and the Guard.
The series is set in an alternate world that is very much like our own, with just a few major differences. One is that slavery is legal there. Slaves must wear metal collars that lock around their neck, making their enslaved status obvious to everyone. Another difference is the popularity of a martial art called cavvara shil. It is fought with a cavvarach (rhymes with "have a rack"), a weapon similar to a sword but with a steel hook protruding from partway down its top edge. Competitors can strike at each other with their feet as well as with the blades. You win in one of two ways: disarming your opponent (hooking or knocking their cavvarach out of their hands) or pinning their shoulders to the mat for five seconds. First, a Little Information about Books 1 and 2: Book 1: The Collar and the Cavvarach Bensin, a teenage slave and martial artist, is desperate to see his little sister freed. But only victory in the Krillonian Empire's most prestigious tournament will allow him to secretly arrange for Ellie's escape. Dangerous people are closing in on her, however, and Bensin is running out of time. With his one hope fading quickly away, how can Bensin save Ellie from a life of slavery and abuse? Book 2: The Gladiator and the Guard Bensin, a teenage slave and martial artist, is just one victory away from freedom. But after he is accused of a crime he didnât commit, he is condemned to the violent life and early death of a gladiator. While his loved ones seek desperately for a way to rescue him, Bensin struggles to stay alive and forge an identity in an environment designed to strip it from him. When he infuriates the authorities with his choices, he knows he is running out of time. Can he stand against the cruelty of the arena system and seize his freedom before that system crushes him? Book 3: The Student and the Slave Is this what freedom is supposed to be like? Desperate to provide for himself and his sister Ellie, Bensin searches fruitlessly for work like all the other former slaves in Tarnestra. He needs the money for an even more important purpose, though: to rescue Coach Steene, who sacrificed himself for Bensinâs freedom. When members of two rival street gangs express interest in Bensinâs martial arts skills, he realizes he may have a chance to save his father figure after all ⦠at a cost. Meanwhile, Steene struggles with his new life of slavery in far-away Neliria. Raymond, his young owner, seizes any opportunity to make his life miserable. But while Steene longs to escape and rejoin Bensin and Ellie, he starts to realize that Raymond needs him too. His choices will affect not only his own future, but that of everyone he cares about. Author Interview
Melanie: Welcome, Annie! Iâm so glad you could join us!
Annie: Thank you! Iâm glad to be here! Melanie: What inspired you to write The Student and the Slave? Annie: Well, itâs book 3 in a trilogy, so my direct inspiration was the ending of book 2. I had left the characters in a tough situation and needed to get them out.
Melanie: What do you usually use when youâre writing? A computer? Paper and pen?
Annie: A computer, definitely. My favorite writing software is Scrivener. It allows for so many types and levels of organization! Melanie: Tell us about one of your hobbies. Annie: I have a fun new one, as of a few weeks ago: dragoning pictures! Unsplash gives me a new photograph for my desktop every day, and one of the first ones I got just looked like it needed a dragon in the sky. I searched online for a suitable picture of a flying dragon of the color I had in mind, did a little research to figure out how best to do what I wanted, and then put the two pictures together. Now I keep my eyes open all the time for pictures that look like theyâre lacking dragons, and I do my best to remedy that lack. Just for fun, hereâs one of my dragoned pictures.
Melanie: If time and money were not a concern, what one skill would you like to learn?
Annie: Hang gliding! Oh, or maybe cavvara shil ⦠as long as the fact that the martial art doesnât exist in this world isnât a concern either. Melanie: What project are you working on now? Annie: Iâm working on a final book in my Annals of Alasia fantasy series, called King of Malorn, which should be ready to publish in the next few months. Iâm also in the editing stage with Heartsong, a science fiction novel. I hope to have that one polished and ready for publication by summer. Melanie: What inspired the cover for your The Student and the Slave? Annie: The weapon you see is a cavvarach, an important symbol through all three books in the trilogy. The shield shape is an important symbol in book 3. It comes up in several scenes and represents freedom and protection. Melanie: Thanks again for joining us and congratulations on your new book!

Evan Carter can’t believe he has to return home and live with his parents. Every hope and dream he ever had dissipated in a car crash that cost him his leg. Stuck in a wheelchair, he’s forced to reexamine his relationship with God and the local carpenter, Jo Ellen Baker. Will renovating his home open the door for a mended relationship, or are some wounds too deep to heal from? Author Interview Me: Good morning, Toni. Thank you for joining us today!
Toni: Thank you so much for having me! Me: If there’s one thing you hope readers come away with after reading your book, what would it be? Toni: That God is not a representation of the people one earth. People are fallible and imperfect and that’s okay. The grace of God covers us. But that does not mean that God is fallible and imperfect. We have to learn that He is worth the risk of faith because He never fails. That's so true! Me: What is one of the most challenging things you’ve faced as an author? Toni: One of the most challenging things I’ve dealt with is the question about the ethnic diversity in my book. I received feedback from a reader who wished I had more than just African American characters in my books. It was something that shocked me because I don’t emphasis race in my books. But since I am a Black author, the majority of my characters are Black. I feel that Christian fiction as a whole is lacking in ethnic characters, so to hear that someone was opposed was a little disheartening. However the majority of my readers don’t see my African American characters as a problem because they can still identify with them. And as a Christian writer, that is my hope, that we see one another’s hearts instead of stopping at their appearance. Me: If there was one place you could go to research a book, where would it be? Toni: I would love to go to Carmel, California. I’ve been but it’s been over a decade and I would love to go back and get it fresh in my mind. Me: What do you usually use when you’re writing? A computer? Paper and pen? Toni: I write on my laptop. One day I would love to write on a typewriter and also take the plunge and use paper and pen. I think it'd be fun to have a typewriter to use as well. Me: Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Toni: I’m an introvert. Meeting new people brings my anxious nerves to the forefront. Thankfully, I’ve learned how to interact with others online and not to clam up if I meet them in person. I definitely understand how you feel. I've struggled with many of the same things most of my life. Me: If time and money were not a concern, what one skill would you like to learn? Toni: I would love to learn some more musical instruments. I already know how to play the clarinet, but I would love to learn how to play the guitar, banjo, piano, and drums. Thanks again for joining us. I hope everyone will check out your new release, Returning Home. Please join me in welcoming Mary Alford to my blog today. Her newest book, Framed for Murder, is now available, and it sounds fantastic! Mary Alford was inspired to become a writer after reading romantic suspense greats Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney. Soon creating characters and throwing them into dangerous situations that test their faith came naturally for Mary. In 2012 Mary entered the Speed Dating contest hosted by Love Inspired Suspense and later received “the call”. In addition to writing for Love Inspired Suspense, Mary also writes Christian romance and sweet romance. Being a published author has been a dream come true for Mary. FALSELY ACCUSED Framed for helping her partner smuggle guns—and then murdering him—CIA agent Liz Ramirez must find the evidence that will prove her innocence…before she's caught or killed. So when her squad's leader attempts to bring her in for questioning, she knows her future depends on convincing Aaron Foster to go rogue and help her. On the run from the rest of her team and the gun dealers who are convinced she knows the location of their missing weapons, Liz risks losing the proof that would clear her name. But will eluding her pursuers—and trying not to fall for the handsome commander—prove to be fatal? Author Interview When did you realize you wanted to be an author? MA: I’d say I realized I wanted to be a writer when I was a pre-teen. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to read just about anything I could get my hands on. As a child, I discovered Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys and was hooked on suspense. As a preteen, I found Phyllis Whitney and Victoria Holt and knew in my heart of hearts that romantic suspense was what I wanted to write. I wrote my first book as a pre-teen, but didn’t really pursue writing seriously until about fourteen years ago. During that time period though, I fine-tuned my writing and found myself drawn to inspirational romantic suspense. Then, in 2012, I entered the Speed Dating contest hosted by Love Inspired Suspense and later received “the call” that I’d sold Forgotten Past, my first LIS book. I truly felt like a writer for the first time and it was a dream come true. It’s still hard to believe at times. Fear and danger are integral parts of your books. Imagination or experience? MA: Imagination and probably too much time reading suspense books and watching ID TV. The fear and danger my characters face is the same challenges we as human’s deal with on a much lesser scale. We may not be facing a killer bent on ending our lives, but we each have things we’re afraid of and keep us awake at night. Our own set of monsters so to speak. Are you an outliner or pantser? MA: Pantser. I’ve tried being the outliner type, but I just don’t operate that way. Do you have any favorite author(s) who have inspired you? MA: Along with Phyllis Whitney and Victoria Holt, I love inspirational romantic suspense authors such as Susan Sleeman and Shirlee McCoy. These women are great at weaving suspense, inspiration and an amazing love story into each of their books. Where do you get your ideas? MA: Most of my ideas start from something I’ve seen or read about. From there, the story begins to take fruition in my head. I let it simmer for a while until I’ve got a good outline worked out in my mind and then I grab my laptop and start writing. The idea for Deadly Memories and Rocky Mountain Pursuit came from my love of spy stories. I can’t get enough of espionage stories. I think it’s the danger, the drama, the intrigue attached to espionage that makes it so appealing to me. These people risk their lives daily to keep our country safe. You write in Christian genres. What is the spiritual takeaway for your books? Is there a recurring theme? MA: I think in all my books the spiritual takeaway is that no matter what we’re facing in life, no matter how dark the world around us may seem, we are never alone. God is right there with us through it all. What are you working on now? MA: I currently finishing up the Scorpion Team series with two more books that will be released in 2018. Okay, just for fun. Tell us three things about yourself that would surprise your readers. MA: Hum, well, I’d say that my hubby and I used to raise Emus and Ostriches. I still can’t believe we did that. That I’m trying to teach myself the guitar, (It’s going very slowly…), and I’d love to do some gold panning on my next trip to Colorado. Oh, and I’d also love to write a children’s book one day. What are your other interests besides writing? MA: Music. I love playing the piano and as I’ve said, I’m learning the guitar very slowly. I also love gardening. I want to learn to make quilts as well. I also love doing crafts with my three granddaughters. They are very inspiring. Thank you for joining us, Mary! Congratulations on your new release!

Chatting with Raine English At Second Glance Hi, Raine! I'm so glad that you could join us today to share about your novella. It's such a fun story! Melanie: Romance, Oregon is a beautiful place with a small-town atmosphere and big personalities. If you could visit Romance yourself, what one shop or person would you want to make sure was on your itinerary? Raine: My first stop would have to be Finding Forever Animal Rescue, and, of course, I couldn’t leave without adopting a dog. Melanie: Animals are a big part of the stories that make up our Fall Into Romance compilation. Tell us a little about the critter(s) in your novella. Raine: Tank is a black mask fawn French bulldog. He becomes grumpy and unhappy when his family releases him to Finding Forever because they couldn’t deal with both a dog and a baby. However, things start to look up for Tank when Claire, Brent’s cousin and an expert on the breed, takes an interest in the Frenchie. Melanie: Which of the characters in your story do you relate to the most? Why is that? Raine: Definitely Claire! She’s a huge dog lover and has this incredible understanding of French bulldogs, which just happens to be my favorite breed. Melanie: How many pets do you have? Tell us a little about them. Raine: I have two French bulldogs. I’m sure that’s not a surprise. Bailey is a grumpy old man and was my inspiration for Tank. Dolly is the complete opposite of Bailey. She was a rescue and is as sweet as can be. The two years that she’s been a member of the family has improved Bailey’s disposition immeasurably. Melanie: Which season of the year do you look forward to the most? Raine: I love fall. I live in New England. Summers can be pretty muggy, so I really look forward to the cool, crisp fall air. I also love when the leaves on the trees change color. It’s just beautiful. Melanie: Coffee, hot cocoa, or tea. Which do you prefer during the fall and winter? Raine: Coffee! All year long. Melanie: There are a lot of wonderful pumpkin-flavored treats at the Fall Festival in Romance. Do you like pumpkin? If so, what’s your favorite pumpkin-flavored food? Raine: I’m addicted to Pumpkin Spice Lattes. I'm going to be chatting with one of these amazing people each week leading up to the release of Fall Into Romance. I hope you enjoy these interviews as much as I have! Chatting with Kit Morgan Lessons in Romance Thanks for joining me, Kit! I absolutely loved your story. Sir Lancelot and Merlin are awesome, and I know the readers will love them, too. Melanie: Romance, Oregon is a beautiful place with a small-town atmosphere and big personalities. If you could visit Romance yourself, what one shop or person would you want to make sure was on your itinerary? Kit: For me I’d like to visit Pages of Romance. Why? Because I’m a bibliophile! Hey, it’s a bookstore! I’d also like to meet Brent Todd and tell him about my little sister who was also bringing home stray animals all the time and if, say, this was not a fictional world, she’d have ended up working there! Melanie: Animals are a big part of the stories that make up our Fall Into Romance compilation. Tell us a little about the critters in your novella. Kit: Golly, what can I say about Sir Lancelot and Merlin? Other than they’re a rooster and a tortoise? But growing up we did have chickens and turtles, which is why I picked those two particular animals. (Even though technically Merlin is a tortoise.) Again, my sister, had the turtles, (not to mention a baby alligator) while our mother had her chickens. Marijo would let the turtles out into the yard and the chickens would occasionally come through, hang out for a while, and then wander elsewhere. For the record, chickens aren’t particularly interested in turtles. Probably because they can’t eat them, and vice versa. Melanie: Which of the characters in your story do you relate to the most? Why is that? Kit: I’d have to say Jenny, the heroine. There was a time I knew nothing about dating and sought books on the subject. In fact, relationships fascinated me so much I became a certified Relationship Coach. Melanie: What was your favorite part about writing your novella? Kit: The fact I was writing a contemporary romance. I write western historical romance for the most part and this was my second contemporary. Melanie: If you had to describe the town of Romance with one word, what would it be? Kit: Homey Melanie: Which fall holiday do you look forward to more: Halloween or Thanksgiving? Kit: Definitely Thanksgiving. For one, I love to cook. Two, no one can find us on Halloween. We’ve had our house for fifty years (family home) and only got one trick or treater, and that’s only because they were lost. Melanie: There are a lot of wonderful pumpkin-flavored treats at the Fall Festival in Romance. Do you like pumpkin? If so, what’s your favorite pumpkin-flavored food? Kit: Pumpkin Cookies! Melanie: What state do you live in? What’s the weather like there in the fall? Kit: I live in Oregon! In fact, I’ve been to the town Romance is patterned after! I know it. For those who have never been here, fall is a great time of year (until it starts raining and the water doesn’t shut off until sometime in late June). I’m in the infamous Willamette Valley which is beautiful in the fall. Once fall officially starts on the calendar though, it can start to get nippy out. But I do love the smells of fall, that sharp tang in the air, the warmer afternoons and chilly nights. Where’s my pumpkin cookie recipe? I can't begin to tell you what a blessing it's been to work with the wonderful authors involved in the Fall Into Romance collection. I'm going to be chatting with one of these amazing people each week leading up to the release of Fall Into Romance. I hope you enjoy these interviews as much as I have! Chatting with Tamie Dearen Restoring Romance I'm so glad you can be here, Tamie! I thoroughly enjoyed reading Restoring Romance. The characters and story were so much fun! Melanie: Romance, Oregon is a beautiful place with a small-town atmosphere and big personalities. If you could visit Romance yourself, what one shop or person would you want to make sure was on your itinerary? Tamie: Since I love antiques, I wouldn’t want to miss visiting Adam Walker’s antiques and restoration store, Good As Old. Adam is the mayor of Romance Oregon, but his passion is finding and restoring beauty to old and neglected pieces of furniture. Melanie: Animals are a big part of the stories that make up our Fall Into Romance compilation. Tell us a little about the critters in your novella. Tamie: In Restoring Romance, Ash, a transplant to Romance from New York City, adopts a large, ugly cat named Lucky, much to the chagrin of Adam, who happens to have a violent feline allergy. Adam, in turn, adopts a large dog—Kujo—with a bark that makes Lucky yowl in fear. Melanie: Which of the characters in your story do you relate to the most? Why is that? Tamie: I suppose I most relate to Donna Walker, who has a large dinner gathering at her house every Sunday night. My husband and I do the same thing every Thursday night, except that our gathering is made up of college and graduate students instead of family. Melanie: What about writing your novella was the most challenging? Tamie: This is the shortest romance I’ve ever written, so my biggest challenge was sticking to the word limit without skimping on the plot or character development. I had to cut a few scenes, but in the end, I gleaned the very best for this story. Melanie: What state do you live in? What’s the weather like there in the fall? Tamie: I live in Texas, where we don’t have much of a fall, but it’s a dream of mine to spend a year some place like Oregon, where I can truly experience all the seasons. Melanie: Coffee, hot cocoa, or tea. Which do you prefer during the fall and winter? Tamie: I love the smell of coffee, but not the taste. I’m a tea girl, all the way. I drink hot tea every single morning, summer or winter. However, my husband makes the best hot cocoa in the world, a special treat I save for evenings around the fire in the winter. Melanie: There are a lot of wonderful pumpkin-flavored treats at the Fall Festival in Romance. Do you like pumpkin? If so, what’s your favorite pumpkin-flavored food? Tamie: For a special treat at Thanksgiving, we sometimes have pumpkin soup, baked in the pumpkin shell. Simply cut off the top, scoop out the seeds, and fill the pumpkin with chicken broth. Then replace the lid and roast it in the oven. When serving, scoop out a bit of the pumpkin meat with the broth. It’s beautiful and yummy! Melanie: When you go to a festival or fair, is there a particular type of food you look forward to getting that you don’t usually buy at any other time? Tamie: My favorite “fair” food is probably roasted corn on the cob. The corn is cooked inside the husk, which is peeled down to make a handle. Then the cob is placed back on the fire to give the corn a little char. Served with butter and salt, it’s a mouth-watering treat. Tamie Dearen has been married to her very romantic husband since 1982. They have two beautiful daughters, two amazing son-in-laws, and one awesome grandson. She plays piano, flute, harmonica, keyboards, and guitar, and loves composing and art. And she hates housework. A dentist in private practice for thirty years, Tamie stays busy playing on her church's praise team and teaching graduate students each week. In her spare time, she escapes the real world by writing books. Tamie met her husband as a freshman in college when she acted out of character on a whim. One night in the library lobby, she spied a cute guy with his first name written on the back of his shirt. She called out his name. When he approached to talk to her, she pretended that she'd met him before, asking about his classes and how he liked college. To her surprise and delight, he also pretended that he knew her, but of course he didn't know her name. They continued this false relationship for two months. Each time they saw each other,an event which occurred three times per week at the cafeteria, he would pretend he knew her. Meanwhile, all of Tamie's friends were careful not to reveal her name to him. When he finally admitted his ignorance of her name, he was astonished to learn the truth. And the rest is history. Restoring Romance She’s a big city chef who likes cats. He’s a small town mayor who restores antiques. But even with feline allergies at play, true love is nothing to sneeze at. When Ash Hendrix moves into her aunt’s historic home in Romance, Oregon, she’s ready to bring New York City style to the sleepy little town. But her dream of remodeling the old home into a stylish restaurant is cut short when the mayor interferes. Her opposite in every way, the infuriating Adam is the last man she could ever be attracted to. So why can’t she stop thinking about him? Mayor Adam Walker can’t believe the cute blond he met at the festival is the woman who’s trying to destroy his family’s legacy. Initially intent on shutting down her plans, he’s shocked to find himself wanting to fulfill them, instead. But she doesn’t trust him. And why would she, with her traumatic past and his earlier antagonism? Can these two opposites find happily-ever-after? Not without a little help from their friends and family… and a can of pink paint. Fall Into Romance - Pre-Order for Only $0.99! I'm going to be chatting with one of these amazing people each week leading up to the release of Fall Into Romance. I hope you enjoy these interviews as much as I have! Chatting with Stacy Claflin Lost In Romance Hi, Stacy! Thanks so much for coming by to chat. I loved your novella, and I know everyone else will, too. Melanie: Romance, Oregon is a beautiful place with a small-town atmosphere and big personalities. If you could visit Romance yourself, what one shop or person would you want to make sure was on your itinerary? Stacy: I don’t want to give any spoilers, but at the end of my novella Lost in Romance, a new business is opened and I think it would be a ton of fun to visit. Melanie: Animals are a big part of the stories that make up our Fall Into Romance compilation. Tell us a little about the critter(s) in your novella. Stacy: There are several. The first one we’re introduced to is Pookie, a ten-year-old cockapoo who is based on the first pet I ever had. I grew up as an only child, so Pookie was a constant playmate and companion! Later in the novella, we meet some sweet ferrets who help Alisyn out when life doesn’t go the way she expects. Melanie: Which of the characters in your story do you relate to the most? Why is that? Stacy: Definitely Alisyn. She loves kids and wishes she was part of a big family, and that’s how I always felt. My first job was babysitting, and then after that, I worked at preschools. After college, I became a nanny! I loved kids and couldn’t get enough of them. My last “job” before becoming a full-time writer was running a home daycare. Even now, I homeschool my kids and love having them around all the time. I wouldn’t have it any other way! Melanie: What’s the most unique pet you’ve ever had? Stacy: Most everyone would agree ferrets (just like in my novella!) We had five, and they were a lot of fun. I’ve also had hermit crabs and frogs. My uncle owns a pet store that my grandpa opened over 40 years ago, so having pets around is in my blood! Melanie: What’s your favorite snack food or drink to have on hand when you’re writing? Stacy: Always coffee! My husband got me a Keurig for my birthday this year, and it was such a wonderful surprise. I joke that coffee is my love language. Since I wake up to write at 4:15 most mornings, caffeine is a must! Melanie: If you’ve been to Oregon, what did you like best about the state? Stacy: It’s very similar to my home state of Washington, so I love that it feels like home. The Pacific Northwest has its own unique feel (every region does!) and I love the nature we have—everything from the backdrop of the snowcapped mountains to the ocean to the smaller lakes and beaches. People may complain about the rain, but we wouldn’t be surrounded by the evergreen beauty without it. Melanie: If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be? Stacy: A cat. I haven’t had one since high school. They’re the perfect blend of independent and affectionate. I love felines and hope to have another one someday. There’s nothing like curling up with a kitty on a rainy fall day! Melanie: What do you enjoy most about fall? Stacy: Although it’s usually hard for me to let go of the summer, I love the brightly colored leaves and cooler weather which tends to go back and forth between chilly and summer-like. There’s so much beauty and such an array of rich colors, it’s hard not appreciate the fall USA Today bestselling author Stacy Claflin entertains readers in a variety of genres, from paranormal to suspense to sweet contemporary romance. She has been telling stories for as long as she can remember, and as a child would often get into trouble trying to convince friends her wild tales were true. Now she puts her creativity to better use by writing page-turning books that leave readers begging for more. Lost In Romance Work is her life. He’s the boss’s son. Will she risk it all for love? Alisyn has thrown herself into her job to avoid facing her past. It has been perfect so far. And as a bonus, working as a nanny lets her be part of a family that she adores. Her job is perfect until the day her boss’s grown son comes to town and takes her breath away. The last place Shane Rockford wants to be is at his dad’s house with his new family. He just wants to survive the trip without losing his mind or his temper. After meeting his dad’s nanny, Shane finds a compelling reason to be in Romance, Oregon—Alisyn Bennett. Dr. Rockford is furious that Alisyn and Shane are going on a date, and he will stop at nothing to keep them apart. Will Alisyn risk her job–her everything–to be with Shane, or will Shane’s father once again ruin his life? Fall Into Romance - Pre-Order for Only $0.99! I can't begin to tell you what a blessing it's been to work with the wonderful authors involved in the Fall Into Romance collection. I'm going to be chatting with one of these amazing people each week leading up to the release of Fall Into Romance. I hope you enjoy these interviews as much as I have! Chatting with Jessica L. Elliott Katie's Chance for Romance Thanks for joining us today, Jessica. I loved your story, and I know all your readers will, too. Melanie: Romance, Oregon is a beautiful place with a small-town atmosphere and big personalities. If you could visit Romance yourself, what one shop or person would you want to make sure was on your itinerary? Jessica: Just one? I'm going to have say Uncle Earl would be the top of my must-meet list. He is such a fun character and has that way of being both sage and ornery at the same time. Melanie: Animals are a big part of the stories that make up our Fall Into Romance compilation. Tell us a little about the critter(s) in your novella. Jessica: When I was first invited to take part in the Fall Into Romance boxed set, Chance was the first character who galloped into my head. He's a beautiful buckskin gelding who has some trust issues. But Katie's not going to let that stop her from loving him. I also knew I wanted dogs in the story, because I love dogs. So Katie has a dog Loverboy and then adopts the timid Roxette. And yes, those names do come from their classic rock counterparts. I didn't originally plan on Mike adopting any animals, but since he lives a little outside town, a mouser was important. Unfortunately, Pooka was not the mouser he was hoping for. He then goes back to Finding Forever and adopts Puppy the cat to be Pooka's trainer. Melanie: Which of the characters in your story do you relate to the most? Why is that? Jessica: Hmmm, I relate a lot to Katie because she shares a lot of personality traits with me. But I think I relate most to Aunt Viv. She's a spunky woman who always has a little mischief up her sleeve. But she also has a way of being tender and loving when needed. She likes to tease and is the perfect companion to Uncle Earl who would live a very boring life without her. Melanie: What’s your favorite snack food or drink to have on hand when you’re writing? Jessica: When I'm writing, I have to have chocolate. Whether in candies or hot cocoa, I love to have chocolate with me while I'm working. It works well as motivation when the words are coming slow. I have to be sure to hide it though or my children would steal it all away. Melanie: If you’ve been to Oregon, what did you like best about the state? Jessica: It's been a long time since I had a real visit (I don't suppose driving over the Snake River into Ontario just to say I've been in Oregon counts), but I remember it being beautiful. It was September when I visited and the trees were just starting to turn. I'm definitely going to have to make another trip out there at some point. Melanie: What was your favorite part about writing your novella? Jessica: Uncle Earl and Aunt Viv, hands down. They made the story so much fun between their teasing and the way they love Katie with all their hearts. I had so much fun writing snippets of their relationship and seeing into their personalities. Melanie: If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be? Jessica: Like Katie, I love horses. Someday I hope to own a couple myself. In the meantime, I'll let my characters own the beautiful horses I wish I had. Melanie: What state do you live in? What’s the weather like there in the fall? Jessica: I live in southwest Kansas and love the fall here! Fall means harvest, which can be challenging for my little ones' allergies, but it also means the prairie changes color. It's such a breathtaking sight to see the grasses turn orange and gold, especially when we've had a good, rainy year. Fall tends to still be pretty warm, but snow can start falling as early as October. For as long as she can remember, Jessica L. Elliott has been telling stories. As soon as she could grasp a pencil she began writing those stories down. Reading fueled her imagination, as did spending time with her five younger brothers and sisters. Everything was an adventure, something to be treasured and stories were her first love. Jessica specializes in stories filled with fun, adventure, and romance. Katie's Chance for Romance Katie Mackall broke up with high school sweetheart Mike Elders when his decision caused a deviation in their plans. Five years later, he returns to Romance and she can't seem to shake him. When Mike comes to her rescue, Katie must decide if she's going to let go of her lingering doubts and give her heart the lead. Mike never forgot Katie, and when he accepts a teaching position in Romance, he hopes to have a second chance with her. But their complicated past, and a PTA mom who won't get out of his way, doesn't make it easy. An instant connection with Katie's new dog may not be enough to win her heart, but determination and patience, with just the right touch of romance, might.
