New Release: The Student and the Slave by Annie Douglass Lima on Melanie D. Snitker's blog
Take a look at this exciting new young adult action and adventure novel, The Student and the Slave, now available for purchase! This is the third book in the Krillonian Chronicles, after The Collar and the Cavvarach and The Gladiator and the Guard.

The series is set in an alternate world that is very much like our own, with just a few major differences.  One is that slavery is legal there.  Slaves must wear metal collars that lock around their neck, making their enslaved status obvious to everyone. Another difference is the popularity of a martial art called cavvara shil.  It is fought with a cavvarach (rhymes with "have a rack"), a weapon similar to a sword but with a steel hook protruding from partway down its top edge.  Competitors can strike at each other with their feet as well as with the blades.  You win in one of two ways: disarming your opponent (hooking or knocking their cavvarach out of their hands) or pinning their shoulders to the mat for five seconds.

The Collar and the Cavvarach by Annie Douglass Lima
First, a Little Information about Books 1 and 2:

Book 1: The Collar and the Cavvarach

Bensin, a teenage slave and martial artist, is desperate to see his little sister freed. But only victory in the Krillonian Empire's most prestigious tournament will allow him to secretly arrange for Ellie's escape. Dangerous people are closing in on her, however, and Bensin is running out of time. With his one hope fading quickly away, how can Bensin save Ellie from a life of slavery and abuse?

The Gladiator and the Guard by Annie Douglass LimaBook 2: The Gladiator and the Guard

Bensin, a teenage slave and martial artist, is just one victory away from freedom. But after he is accused of a crime he didn’t commit, he is condemned to the violent life and early death of a gladiator. While his loved ones seek desperately for a way to rescue him, Bensin struggles to stay alive and forge an identity in an environment designed to strip it from him. When he infuriates the authorities with his choices, he knows he is running out of time. Can he stand against the cruelty of the arena system and seize his freedom before that system crushes him?

And now, The Student and the Slave, with another awesome cover by the talented Jack Lin!

Book 3: The Student and the Slave

Is this what freedom is supposed to be like? Desperate to provide for himself and his sister Ellie, Bensin searches fruitlessly for work like all the other former slaves in Tarnestra. He needs the money for an even more important purpose, though: to rescue Coach Steene, who sacrificed himself for Bensin’s freedom. When members of two rival street gangs express interest in Bensin’s martial arts skills, he realizes he may have a chance to save his father figure after all … at a cost.

Meanwhile, Steene struggles with his new life of slavery in far-away Neliria. Raymond, his young owner, seizes any opportunity to make his life miserable. But while Steene longs to escape and rejoin Bensin and Ellie, he starts to realize that Raymond needs him too. His choices will affect not only his own future, but that of everyone he cares about. Can he make the right ones … and live with the consequences?

Author Interview
Melanie: Welcome, Annie! I’m so glad you could join us!

Annie: Thank you! I’m glad to be here!

Melanie: What inspired you to write The Student and the Slave?

Annie: Well, it’s book 3 in a trilogy, so my direct inspiration was the ending of book 2. I had left the characters in a tough situation and needed to get them out.
Picture
Melanie: What do you usually use when you’re writing? A computer? Paper and pen?

Annie: A computer, definitely. My favorite writing software is Scrivener. It allows for so many types and levels of organization!

Melanie: Tell us about one of your hobbies.

Annie: I have a fun new one, as of a few weeks ago: dragoning pictures! Unsplash gives me a new photograph for my desktop every day, and one of the first ones I got just looked like it needed a dragon in the sky. I searched online for a suitable picture of a flying dragon of the color I had in mind, did a little research to figure out how best to do what I wanted, and then put the two pictures together. Now I keep my eyes open all the time for pictures that look like they’re lacking dragons, and I do my best to remedy that lack. Just for fun, here’s one of my dragoned pictures.
Picture
Melanie: If time and money were not a concern, what one skill would you like to learn?

Annie: Hang gliding! Oh, or maybe cavvara shil … as long as the fact that the martial art doesn’t exist in this world isn’t a concern either.

Melanie: What project are you working on now?

Annie: I’m working on a final book in my Annals of Alasia fantasy series, called King of Malorn, which should be ready to publish in the next few months. I’m also in the editing stage with Heartsong, a science fiction novel. I hope to have that one polished and ready for publication by summer.

Melanie: What inspired the cover for your The Student and the Slave?

Annie: The weapon you see is a cavvarach, an important symbol through all three books in the trilogy. The shield shape is an important symbol in book 3. It comes up in several scenes and represents freedom and protection.

Melanie: Thanks again for joining us and congratulations on your new book!

Introducing: The 25 Days of Christmas

11/6/2017

Please join me in welcoming Ruth O'Neil, one of the authors of the new book, The 25 Days of Christmas Family Devotional. Read below to find out more and read an excerpt.
The 25 Days of Christmas Family Devotional
Many of us get caught up in the commercialization of Christmas. One way to prevent that is to focus on the reason for the season. Taking a few minutes each day with this different kind of devotional book will help your family think of others. Each day focuses on one word and includes a story from Daniel and Holly's family, a Scripture reading with the devotional, the YouTube link to a Christmas Carol, and an activity that the entire family can be involved in.
Available on Amazon

Excerpt
Story
"I have a surprise for you kids," Mom said as soon as Daniel and Holly walked in the door after school.

"What?" They both wanted to know.

"Follow me," Mom requested as she walked toward the family room.

Two-year-old Evie followed along behind, clapping her hands and giggling.

"She must know what the secret is," Daniel commented to Holly.

Holly laughed when Evie shouted, "Sec-et! Sec-et!"

Mom smiled as well. "That's her new word for the day."

Then Mom held up a box that had a bunch of what looked like little doors. Twenty-five of them to be exact. They each had a number.

"What's that?" Daniel asked.

"It's an Advent calendar. Each day we'll open one. Behind each door is a treat for each of you and a word we can talk about to help us prepare for Christmas."

"Can we open one now?" Holly wanted to know.

"You may." Mom pointed to the first door.

"Advent," Holy read after she took out three small candies and handed one to Daniel and Evie.

"Advent is all about the days leading up to Christmas. We can talk about what Christmas really means and prepare our hearts to worship Christ."

"Why did Jesus have to come to earth as a baby? Why couldn't He come as a grown-up?" Daniel wondered as he picked up the baby Jesus from the Nativity set.

"Well, Jesus needed time to prepare, too. He needed to experience all the things we experience. He experienced what it was like to grow up, have a family and friends, and be tempted by sin just like the rest of us. No matter what problems we face in life, Jesus truly understands."

"But I thought Jesus was perfect and never sinned?" Holly questioned.

Mom nodded her head. "He was perfect. He didn't ever sin, but He still went through a lot of the same things we do. Because He lived a perfect and sinless life, that's what made Him a suitable sacrifice for our sins. Only a perfect Man could pay the price for us."

Daniel and Holly didn't say anything. For a few moments, the only sound heard was Evie slurping her candy and quietly repeating, "Sec-et."

Mom continued. "God had to prepare the world for Salvation to come in the form of His Son, Jesus. It wouldn't happen overnight. It would take Jesus' entire life time here on earth."

Daniel, always the one who wanted to learn more, said, "I think this will be interesting."

"I think this will be fun," Holly gave her opinion.

"I think it will help prepare us all and help us to understand Christmas just a little bit better."

Devotion
Read Matthew 25:1-13
This man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. Luke 2:25b-26

Advent is a time of preparation. The Christmas Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas. Many families, especially those with young children, have Advent calendars. Each day the children get to open a door, receive a little gift, or remove an object in the countdown for and in anticipation of Christmas.

Children, for the most part, look forward to Christmas because of the gifts they will receive. That’s not a bad thing, but we as adults, should have a much deeper anticipation of Christmas. We take the time to buy and wrap gifts, prepare food, clean the house for guests, buy new outfits, attend parties, etc. But how much time do we put into meditating on the actual birth of Christ and worshipping Him?

Many years, at least in our household, we spend time putting up the tree and decorating it, only to ignore it. We more often than not, sit in the room with the TV. Unfortunately, that’s often the way we are with God as well. We accept Him as Savior. We attend church on Sundays. Other than that, we pretty much ignore Him, too.

This Christmas, in anticipation of the celebration of His birth, let’s focus on Him a little more throughout the month. Let’s prepare our hearts by reflecting on why He came to earth.

Christmas will be that much more special when we focus on the true Reason for the Season.

Activity
This activity will take some extra planning. Get together as a family; you can even invite your extended family members to take part in this one as well. Choose a family that is in need; try to find a specific need if possible. Gather together money to give to that family for the specific need that they have. If possible, try not to let them know where their Christmas gift is coming from. That makes it all the more exciting for both them and you.

Cover Reveal: Finding Grace & A Giveaway
When I started writing Finding Peace, the first book in the Love's Compass series, I knew there would be at least two more titles. Little did I know, I would be publishing the sixth book exactly three years after the release of the first. It's been amazing working on this series and watching these characters fall in love, their families grow, and their faith persevere.

Finding Grace is about Beth Davenport, Lance's youngest sister. I've been looking forward to this book because I knew I could include Lance and Lexi from Finding Hope (which, I have to admit, is my favorite couple lol), and Avalon's family from Finding Courage.

Writing this book was such a bittersweet experience. The story itself was a lot of fun, and I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting all of my favorite characters. It was also sad, too, knowing that this was the last story I'd write based on the Chandler or Davenport families.

Even though there will be no more books in the Love's Compass series, I will continue to imagine their families relying on God and each other as they grow and change.

Without further ado, continue on for the cover reveal of Finding Grace, a special price for Finding Peace, and enter for your chance to win a $5.00 Amazon gift card!

Finding Grace: The Final Chapter
Finding Grace by Melanie D. Snitker
Single dad Tyler Martin can't be more grateful to the woman who finds his missing daughter. Even though he feels a spark between them, falling in love is a risk he shouldn't take. Too bad chance encounters and his stubborn heart keep trying to convince him otherwise.

After escaping a nightmarish relationship, Beth Davenport is content with her safe and blessedly normal life. Yet something about Tyler and his adorable daughter makes her wish for more. With the walls around her heart finally starting to crumble, she's afraid of a future she can't predict.

Can they let go of their fear and trust God to lead them to the love they desperately need?

Love's Compass Series by Melanie D. Snitker
Finding Peace – Police Officer Tuck Chandler is determined to protect Laurie Blake and find out who keeps breaking into her photography studio – assuming she lets him! As the case unfolds and the mystery deepens, another question arises. Will the past get in the way of their future?

Finding Hope – When Lexi Chandler is diagnosed with cancer, it feels like her life is falling apart around her. Lance Davenport has had feelings for Lexi for years. He doesn’t know what the future holds, but he’s determined to not waste another minute.

Finding Courage – For Duke and Avalon McNeil, it was love at first sight. But shortly after getting married, Duke’s heart was shattered when Avalon disappears for three weeks. As outside pressure continues to threaten their fragile foundation, they must find the strength to prove to each other their marriage is worth fighting for.

Finding Faith – Serenity Chandler will do whatever it takes to help her son, Gideon, who has autism. That includes moving away from everyone she knows so he can attend a special needs school. Aaron Randall is a music therapist and enjoys helping children reach their full potential. The more time Aaron spends with Serenity and Gideon, the harder it is to ignore what they could have together.

Finding Joy - A horrific accident changed everything for Parker Wilson. The beautiful new employee his mom hires is the last thing he needs to deal with. Nothing short of desperation would force Chelsea Blake to work on a local cattle ranch. Unprepared to discover all they have in common, if they set aside their initial dislike, they might find joy beyond measure.

Finding Grace - For Tyler, falling in love is a risk he shouldn’t take. Too bad chance encounters and his stubborn heart keep trying to convince him otherwise.  After escaping a nightmarish relationship, Beth Davenport is content with her safe and blessedly normal life. Yet something about Tyler and his adorable daughter makes her wish for more. Can they let go of their fear and trust God to lead them to the love they desperately need?

Author Interview
Me: Good morning, Toni. Thank you for joining us today!
Toni: Thank you so much for having me!

Me: If there’s one thing you hope readers come away with after reading your book, what would it be?
Toni: That God is not a representation of the people one earth. People are fallible and imperfect and that’s okay. The grace of God covers us. But that does not mean that God is fallible and imperfect. We have to learn that He is worth the risk of faith because He never fails.
That's so true!

Me: What is one of the most challenging things you’ve faced as an author?
Toni: One of the most challenging things I’ve dealt with is the question about the ethnic diversity in my book. I received feedback from a reader who wished I had more than just African American characters in my books. It was something that shocked me because I don’t emphasis race in my books. But since I am a Black author, the majority of my characters are Black. I feel that Christian fiction as a whole is lacking in ethnic characters, so to hear that someone was opposed was a little disheartening. However the majority of my readers don’t see my African American characters as a problem because they can still identify with them. And as a Christian writer, that is my hope, that we see one another’s hearts instead of stopping at their appearance.

Me: If there was one place you could go to research a book, where would it be?
Toni: I would love to go to Carmel, California. I’ve been but it’s been over a decade and I would love to go back and get it fresh in my mind.

Me: What do you usually use when you’re writing? A computer? Paper and pen?
Toni: I write on my laptop. One day I would love to write on a typewriter and also take the plunge and use paper and pen.
I think it'd be fun to have a typewriter to use as well.

Me: Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
Toni: I’m an introvert. Meeting new people brings my anxious nerves to the forefront. Thankfully, I’ve learned how to interact with others online and not to clam up if I meet them in person.
I definitely understand how you feel. I've struggled with many of the same things most of my life.

Me: If time and money were not a concern, what one skill would you like to learn?
Toni: I would love to learn some more musical instruments. I already know how to play the clarinet, but I would love to learn how to play the guitar, banjo, piano, and drums.

Thanks again for joining us. I hope everyone will check out your new release, Returning Home.

Author Interview
When did you realize you wanted to be an author?
MA: I’d say I realized I wanted to be a writer when I was a pre-teen. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to read just about anything I could get my hands on. As a child, I discovered Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys and was hooked on suspense. As a preteen, I found Phyllis Whitney and Victoria Holt and knew in my heart of hearts that romantic suspense was what I wanted to write.

I wrote my first book as a pre-teen, but didn’t really pursue writing seriously until about fourteen years ago. During that time period though, I fine-tuned my writing and found myself drawn to inspirational romantic suspense. Then, in 2012, I entered the Speed Dating contest hosted by Love Inspired Suspense and later received “the call” that I’d sold Forgotten Past, my first LIS book. I truly felt like a writer for the first time and it was a dream come true. It’s still hard to believe at times.

Fear and danger are integral parts of your books. Imagination or experience?
MA: Imagination and probably too much time reading suspense books and watching ID TV. The fear and danger my characters face is the same challenges we as human’s deal with on a much lesser scale. We may not be facing a killer bent on ending our lives, but we each have things we’re afraid of and keep us awake at night. Our own set of monsters so to speak.

Are you an outliner or pantser?
MA: Pantser. I’ve tried being the outliner type, but I just don’t operate that way.

Do you have any favorite author(s) who have inspired you?
MA: Along with Phyllis Whitney and Victoria Holt, I love inspirational romantic suspense authors such as Susan Sleeman and Shirlee McCoy. These women are great at weaving suspense, inspiration and an amazing love story into each of their books.

Where do you get your ideas?
MA: Most of my ideas start from something I’ve seen or read about. From there, the story begins to take fruition in my head. I let it simmer for a while until I’ve got a good outline worked out in my mind and then I grab my laptop and start writing. The idea for Deadly Memories and Rocky Mountain Pursuit came from my love of spy stories. I can’t get enough of espionage stories. I think it’s the danger, the drama, the intrigue attached to espionage that makes it so appealing to me. These people risk their lives daily to keep our country safe.

You write in Christian genres. What is the spiritual takeaway for your books? Is there a recurring theme?
MA: I think in all my books the spiritual takeaway is that no matter what we’re facing in life, no matter how dark the world around us may seem, we are never alone. God is right there with us through it all.

What are you working on now?
MA: I currently finishing up the Scorpion Team series with two more books that will be released in 2018.

Okay, just for fun. Tell us three things about yourself that would surprise your readers.
MA: Hum, well, I’d say that my hubby and I used to raise Emus and Ostriches. I still can’t believe we did that. That I’m trying to teach myself the guitar, (It’s going very slowly…), and I’d love to do some gold panning on my next trip to Colorado. Oh, and I’d also love to write a children’s book one day.

What are your other interests besides writing?
MA: Music. I love playing the piano and as I’ve said, I’m learning the guitar very slowly. I also love gardening. I want to learn to make quilts as well. I also love doing crafts with my three granddaughters. They are very inspiring.
Thank you for joining us, Mary! Congratulations on your new release!

Final Days to Nominate Marrying Mandy by Melanie D. Snitker
Thanks to all of you wonderful readers who have nominated Marrying Mandy over on Kindle Scout, the book has managed to stay Hot & Trending for the last 26 days! With only a few days left in the campaign, I'm hoping this is a good sign that Amazon will select it for one of their publication contracts.

If you haven't voted for Marrying Mandy yet, you still have time. Every vote counts!
Nominate Marrying Mandy
Marrying Mandy was one of my favorite books to write. If you'd like to read the first few chapters of Preston and Mandy's story, you can head over to Kindle Scout and find them there. And don't forget, if Amazon chooses Mandy, everyone who nominated it will receive a free digital copy!

Meanwhile, here's a little more about this modern marriage of convenience:

A marriage of convenience or true love?
Preston's heart aches for the woman he's loved for years. Mandy's on the verge of losing the only real home she's ever known. Frustrated by her stubborn refusal to let him help, he's certain they are stronger together than they are apart. A marriage of convenience might be crazy... or an answer to both their prayers.

The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck by Bethany Turner — Becoming a Christian is the best and worst thing that has ever happened to Sarah Hollenbeck. Best because, well, that’s obvious. Worst because, up to this point, she’s made her very comfortable living as a well-known, bestselling author of steamy romance novels that would leave the members of her new church blushing. Now Sarah is trying to reconcile her past with the future she’s chosen. She’s still under contract with her publisher and on the hook with her enormous fan base for the kind of book she’s not sure she can write anymore. She’s beginning to think that the church might frown on her tithing on royalties from a “scandalous” book. And the fact that she’s falling in love with her pastor doesn’t make things any easier. (Contemporary Romance from Revell – A Division of Baker Publishing Group)

A Waltz for Amber by Kimberly Rose Johnson — Amber, a struggling dance teacher, is desperate to make a success of her studio. Will she be able to sustain her business or will she lose everything in the pursuit of her dream? Chris is thrilled to be back in his hometown. However, his past won’t stay in the past, and the pretty dance instructor is a constant reminder of his failings. He wants to make up for his youthful mistake directed at her, but how? (Contemporary Romance, Independently Published)

Until the boys’ estranged uncle, Jason Stephanidis, comes home to celebrate the holidays. The handsome, brooding detective turns out to be a natural with the babies…and with Erica’s wounded heart. But if Jason knew the truth about their identities, her picture-perfect life could melt away. Will Erica’s secret cost her everything? (Contemporary Romance from Love Inspired [Harlequin])

Still, working with him and bonding with his sweet little girl is making the ranch feel merry and bright. Being at Resa’s side stirs up emotions Colson thought were long gone. But he has a powerful secret that could keep them apart forever. Can Colson give Resa the one Christmas present that might finally bring them back together—the truth? (Contemporary Romance from Love Inspired [Harlequin])

The Gift of Christmas Past by Cindy Woodsmall and Erin Woodsmall — Arson wasn’t the only fire that ignited between them. Promises shattered. Lies spoken. She was arrested. He returned to the safety of his wealthy parents.
Almost ten years later, Hadley and Monroe are both specialists in the field of speech therapy. They meet again . . . thrown together to help a four-year-old-girl rendered mute after being rescued from a fire. Her new family greets her with apathy and even resentment. Only the quiet houseguest, Silas Rotherham, welcomes her company. When Aurelie decides to complete her father’s unfinished serial novel, writing the family into the story as unflattering characters, she must keep her identity as Nathaniel Droll hidden while searching for the truth about her mother’s disappearance–and perhaps even her father’s death. Emilia’s only hope is to prove her musical talents are as indispensable as her sister’s skills. First, though, Emilia must win over her music tutor, who disdains her simply for being a girl. Before she can carry out her plan, though, Emilia’s mother dies in childbirth. In her sorrow, Emilia composes a heartrending sonata that causes the maestro to finally recognize her talent. I can't begin to tell you what a blessing it's been to work with the wonderful authors involved in the Fall Into Romance collection. I'm going to be chatting with one of these amazing people each week leading up to the release of Fall Into Romance. I hope you enjoy these interviews as much as I have!

Chatting with Raine English
At Second Glance
Hi, Raine! I'm so glad that you could join us today to share about your novella. It's such a fun story!

Melanie: Romance, Oregon is a beautiful place with a small-town atmosphere and big personalities. If you could visit Romance yourself, what one shop or person would you want to make sure was on your itinerary?

Raine: My first stop would have to be Finding Forever Animal Rescue, and, of course, I couldn’t leave without adopting a dog.

Melanie: Animals are a big part of the stories that make up our Fall Into Romance compilation. Tell us a little about the critter(s) in your novella.

Raine: Tank is a black mask fawn French bulldog. He becomes grumpy and unhappy when his family releases him to Finding Forever because they couldn’t deal with both a dog and a baby. However, things start to look up for Tank when Claire, Brent’s cousin and an expert on the breed, takes an interest in the Frenchie.

Melanie: Which of the characters in your story do you relate to the most? Why is that?

Raine: Definitely Claire! She’s a huge dog lover and has this incredible understanding of French bulldogs, which just happens to be my favorite breed.

Melanie: How many pets do you have? Tell us a little about them.

Raine: I have two French bulldogs. I’m sure that’s not a surprise. Bailey is a grumpy old man and was my inspiration for Tank. Dolly is the complete opposite of Bailey. She was a rescue and is as sweet as can be. The two years that she’s been a member of the family has improved Bailey’s disposition immeasurably.

Melanie: Which season of the year do you look forward to the most?

Raine: I love fall. I live in New England. Summers can be pretty muggy, so I really look forward to the cool, crisp fall air. I also love when the leaves on the trees change color. It’s just beautiful.

Melanie: Coffee, hot cocoa, or tea. Which do you prefer during the fall and winter?

Raine: Coffee! All year long.

Melanie: There are a lot of wonderful pumpkin-flavored treats at the Fall Festival in Romance. Do you like pumpkin? If so, what’s your favorite pumpkin-flavored food?

Raine: I’m addicted to Pumpkin Spice Lattes.
