Take a look at this exciting new young adult action and adventure novel, The Student and the Slave, now available for purchase! This is the third book in the Krillonian Chronicles, after The Collar and the Cavvarach and The Gladiator and the Guard.
The series is set in an alternate world that is very much like our own, with just a few major differences. One is that slavery is legal there. Slaves must wear metal collars that lock around their neck, making their enslaved status obvious to everyone. Another difference is the popularity of a martial art called cavvara shil. It is fought with a cavvarach (rhymes with "have a rack"), a weapon similar to a sword but with a steel hook protruding from partway down its top edge. Competitors can strike at each other with their feet as well as with the blades. You win in one of two ways: disarming your opponent (hooking or knocking their cavvarach out of their hands) or pinning their shoulders to the mat for five seconds. First, a Little Information about Books 1 and 2: Book 1: The Collar and the Cavvarach Bensin, a teenage slave and martial artist, is desperate to see his little sister freed. But only victory in the Krillonian Empire's most prestigious tournament will allow him to secretly arrange for Ellie's escape. Author Interview
Melanie: Welcome, Annie! Iâm so glad you could join us!
Annie: Thank you! Iâm glad to be here! Melanie: What inspired you to write The Student and the Slave? Annie: Well, itâs book 3 in a trilogy, so my direct inspiration was the ending of book 2. I had left the characters in a tough situation and needed to get them out.
Melanie: What do you usually use when youâre writing? A computer? Paper and pen?
Annie: A computer, definitely. My favorite writing software is Scrivener. It allows for so many types and levels of organization! Melanie: Tell us about one of your hobbies. Annie: I have a fun new one, as of a few weeks ago: dragoning pictures! Unsplash gives me a new photograph for my desktop every day, and one of the first ones I got just looked like it needed a dragon in the sky. I searched online for a suitable picture of a flying dragon of the color I had in mind, did a little research to figure out how best to do what I wanted, and then put the two pictures together. Now I keep my eyes open all the time for pictures that look like theyâre lacking dragons, and I do my best to remedy that lack. Just for fun, hereâs one of my dragoned pictures.
Melanie: If time and money were not a concern, what one skill would you like to learn?
Annie: Hang gliding! Oh, or maybe cavvara shil ⦠as long as the fact that the martial art doesnât exist in this world isnât a concern either. Melanie: What project are you working on now? Annie: Iâm working on a final book in my Annals of Alasia fantasy series, called King of Malorn, which should be ready to publish in the next few months. Iâm also in the editing stage with Heartsong, a science fiction novel. I hope to have that one polished and ready for publication by summer. Melanie: What inspired the cover for your The Student and the Slave? Annie: The weapon you see is a cavvarach, an important symbol through all three books in the trilogy. The shield shape is an important symbol in book 3. It comes up in several scenes and represents freedom and protection. Melanie: Thanks again for joining us and congratulations on your new book!

Please join me in welcoming Ruth O'Neil, one of the authors of the new book, The 25 Days of Christmas Family Devotional. Read below to find out more and read an excerpt. Many of us get caught up in the commercialization of Christmas. One way to prevent that is to focus on the reason for the season. Taking a few minutes each day with this different kind of devotional book will help your family think of others. Each day focuses on one word and includes a story from Daniel and Holly's family, a Scripture reading with the devotional, the YouTube link to a Christmas Carol, and an activity that the entire family can be involved in. Excerpt Story "I have a surprise for you kids," Mom said as soon as Daniel and Holly walked in the door after school. "What?" They both wanted to know. "Follow me," Mom requested as she walked toward the family room. Two-year-old Evie followed along behind, clapping her hands and giggling. "She must know what the secret is," Daniel commented to Holly. Holly laughed when Evie shouted, "Sec-et! Sec-et!" Mom smiled as well. "That's her new word for the day." Then Mom held up a box that had a bunch of what looked like little doors. Twenty-five of them to be exact. They each had a number. "What's that?" Daniel asked. "It's an Advent calendar. Each day we'll open one. Behind each door is a treat for each of you and a word we can talk about to help us prepare for Christmas." "Can we open one now?" Holly wanted to know. "You may." Mom pointed to the first door. "Advent," Holy read after she took out three small candies and handed one to Daniel and Evie. "Advent is all about the days leading up to Christmas. We can talk about what Christmas really means and prepare our hearts to worship Christ." "Why did Jesus have to come to earth as a baby? Why couldn't He come as a grown-up?" Daniel wondered as he picked up the baby Jesus from the Nativity set. "Well, Jesus needed time to prepare, too. He needed to experience all the things we experience. He experienced what it was like to grow up, have a family and friends, and be tempted by sin just like the rest of us. No matter what problems we face in life, Jesus truly understands." "But I thought Jesus was perfect and never sinned?" Holly questioned. Mom nodded her head. "He was perfect. He didn't ever sin, but He still went through a lot of the same things we do. Because He lived a perfect and sinless life, that's what made Him a suitable sacrifice for our sins. Only a perfect Man could pay the price for us." Daniel and Holly didn't say anything. For a few moments, the only sound heard was Evie slurping her candy and quietly repeating, "Sec-et." Mom continued. "God had to prepare the world for Salvation to come in the form of His Son, Jesus. It wouldn't happen overnight. It would take Jesus' entire life time here on earth." Daniel, always the one who wanted to learn more, said, "I think this will be interesting." "I think this will be fun," Holly gave her opinion. "I think it will help prepare us all and help us to understand Christmas just a little bit better." Devotion Read Matthew 25:1-13 This man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. Luke 2:25b-26 Advent is a time of preparation. The Christmas Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas. Many families, especially those with young children, have Advent calendars. Each day the children get to open a door, receive a little gift, or remove an object in the countdown for and in anticipation of Christmas. Children, for the most part, look forward to Christmas because of the gifts they will receive. That’s not a bad thing, but we as adults, should have a much deeper anticipation of Christmas. We take the time to buy and wrap gifts, prepare food, clean the house for guests, buy new outfits, attend parties, etc. But how much time do we put into meditating on the actual birth of Christ and worshipping Him? Many years, at least in our household, we spend time putting up the tree and decorating it, only to ignore it. We more often than not, sit in the room with the TV. Unfortunately, that’s often the way we are with God as well. We accept Him as Savior. We attend church on Sundays. Other than that, we pretty much ignore Him, too. This Christmas, in anticipation of the celebration of His birth, let’s focus on Him a little more throughout the month. Let’s prepare our hearts by reflecting on why He came to earth. Christmas will be that much more special when we focus on the true Reason for the Season. Activity This activity will take some extra planning. Get together as a family; you can even invite your extended family members to take part in this one as well. Choose a family that is in need; try to find a specific need if possible. Gather together money to give to that family for the specific need that they have. If possible, try not to let them know where their Christmas gift is coming from. That makes it all the more exciting for both them and you. Little did I know, I would be publishing the sixth book exactly three years after the release of the first. It's been amazing working on this series and watching these characters fall in love, their families grow, and their faith persevere. Finding Grace is about Beth Davenport, Lance's youngest sister. I've been looking forward to this book because I knew I could include Lance and Lexi from Finding Hope (which, I have to admit, is my favorite couple lol), and Avalon's family from Finding Courage. Writing this book was such a bittersweet experience. The story itself was a lot of fun, and I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting all of my favorite characters. It was also sad, too, knowing that this was the last story I'd write based on the Chandler or Davenport families. Even though there will be no more books in the Love's Compass series, I will continue to imagine their families relying on God and each other as they grow and change. Without further ado, continue on for the cover reveal of Finding Grace, a special price for Finding Peace, and enter for your chance to win a $5.00 Amazon gift card! Finding Grace: The Final Chapter Single dad Tyler Martin can't be more grateful to the woman who finds his missing daughter. Toni: Thank you so much for having me! Me: If there’s one thing you hope readers come away with after reading your book, what would it be? Toni: That God is not a representation of the people one earth. People are fallible and imperfect and that’s okay. The grace of God covers us. But that does not mean that God is fallible and imperfect. We have to learn that He is worth the risk of faith because He never fails. That's so true! Me: What is one of the most challenging things you’ve faced as an author? Toni: One of the most challenging things I’ve dealt with is the question about the ethnic diversity in my book. I received feedback from a reader who wished I had more than just African American characters in my books. It was something that shocked me because I don’t emphasis race in my books. But since I am a Black author, the majority of my characters are Black. I feel that Christian fiction as a whole is lacking in ethnic characters, so to hear that someone was opposed was a little disheartening. However the majority of my readers don’t see my African American characters as a problem because they can still identify with them. And as a Christian writer, that is my hope, that we see one another’s hearts instead of stopping at their appearance. Me: If there was one place you could go to research a book, where would it be? Toni: I would love to go to Carmel, California. I’ve been but it’s been over a decade and I would love to go back and get it fresh in my mind. Me: What do you usually use when you’re writing? A computer? Paper and pen? Toni: I write on my laptop. One day I would love to write on a typewriter and also take the plunge and use paper and pen. I think it'd be fun to have a typewriter to use as well. Me: Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Toni: I’m an introvert. Meeting new people brings my anxious nerves to the forefront. Thankfully, I’ve learned how to interact with others online and not to clam up if I meet them in person. I definitely understand how you feel. I've struggled with many of the same things most of my life. Me: If time and money were not a concern, what one skill would you like to learn? Toni: I would love to learn some more musical instruments. I already know how to play the clarinet, but I would love to learn how to play the guitar, banjo, piano, and drums. Thanks again for joining us. I hope everyone will check out your new release, Returning Home. Anyone remember the 70's Dating Game? Please join me in welcoming Mary Alford to my blog today. Her newest book, Framed for Murder, is now available, and it sounds fantastic! Mary Alford was inspired to become a writer after reading romantic suspense greats Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney. Soon creating characters and throwing them into dangerous situations that test their faith came naturally for Mary. In 2012 Mary entered the Speed Dating contest hosted by Love Inspired Suspense and later received “the call”. In addition to writing for Love Inspired Suspense, Mary also writes Christian romance and sweet romance. Being a published author has been a dream come true for Mary. FALSELY ACCUSED Framed for helping her partner smuggle guns—and then murdering him—CIA agent Liz Ramirez must find the evidence that will prove her innocence…before she's caught or killed. So when her squad's leader attempts to bring her in for questioning, she knows her future depends on convincing Aaron Foster to go rogue and help her. On the run from the rest of her team and the gun dealers who are convinced she knows the location of their missing weapons, Liz risks losing the proof that would clear her name. But will eluding her pursuers—and trying not to fall for the handsome commander—prove to be fatal? Author Interview When did you realize you wanted to be an author? MA: I’d say I realized I wanted to be a writer when I was a pre-teen. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to read just about anything I could get my hands on. As a child, I discovered Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys and was hooked on suspense. As a preteen, I found Phyllis Whitney and Victoria Holt and knew in my heart of hearts that romantic suspense was what I wanted to write. I wrote my first book as a pre-teen, but didn’t really pursue writing seriously until about fourteen years ago. During that time period though, I fine-tuned my writing and found myself drawn to inspirational romantic suspense. Then, in 2012, I entered the Speed Dating contest hosted by Love Inspired Suspense and later received “the call” that I’d sold Forgotten Past, my first LIS book. I truly felt like a writer for the first time and it was a dream come true. It’s still hard to believe at times. Fear and danger are integral parts of your books. Imagination or experience? MA: Imagination and probably too much time reading suspense books and watching ID TV. The fear and danger my characters face is the same challenges we as human’s deal with on a much lesser scale. We may not be facing a killer bent on ending our lives, but we each have things we’re afraid of and keep us awake at night. Our own set of monsters so to speak. Are you an outliner or pantser? MA: Pantser. I’ve tried being the outliner type, but I just don’t operate that way. Do you have any favorite author(s) who have inspired you? MA: Along with Phyllis Whitney and Victoria Holt, I love inspirational romantic suspense authors such as Susan Sleeman and Shirlee McCoy. These women are great at weaving suspense, inspiration and an amazing love story into each of their books. Where do you get your ideas? MA: Most of my ideas start from something I’ve seen or read about. From there, the story begins to take fruition in my head. I let it simmer for a while until I’ve got a good outline worked out in my mind and then I grab my laptop and start writing. The idea for Deadly Memories and Rocky Mountain Pursuit came from my love of spy stories. I can’t get enough of espionage stories. I think it’s the danger, the drama, the intrigue attached to espionage that makes it so appealing to me. These people risk their lives daily to keep our country safe. You write in Christian genres. What is the spiritual takeaway for your books? Is there a recurring theme? MA: I think in all my books the spiritual takeaway is that no matter what we’re facing in life, no matter how dark the world around us may seem, we are never alone. God is right there with us through it all. What are you working on now? MA: I currently finishing up the Scorpion Team series with two more books that will be released in 2018. Okay, just for fun. Tell us three things about yourself that would surprise your readers. MA: Hum, well, I’d say that my hubby and I used to raise Emus and Ostriches. I still can’t believe we did that. That I’m trying to teach myself the guitar, (It’s going very slowly…), and I’d love to do some gold panning on my next trip to Colorado. Oh, and I’d also love to write a children’s book one day. What are your other interests besides writing? MA: Music. I love playing the piano and as I’ve said, I’m learning the guitar very slowly. I also love gardening. I want to learn to make quilts as well. I also love doing crafts with my three granddaughters. They are very inspiring. Thank you for joining us, Mary! Congratulations on your new release!
