How does an act of kindness result in… marriage?
Born dirt-poor into a life of hardship, Allie Tillman seizes the opportunity to better her situation by answering an advertisement for a mail-order bride in the West. Upon her arrival in Baker City, Oregon, she discovers her intended is a low-down, lying thief. Determined not to marry him, she grasps at the one thing that will keep him from forcing her to be his wife — marrying another man. Good-natured cowboy Ben Amick had no idea a simple trip into town would completely change his life. When he happens upon a mail-order bride desperate to avoid marrying her fiancé, Ben does the first thing that pops into his head and marries her. Willingly, he gives her the protection of his name and his arms, never expecting her to capture his heart. Humorous, heartfelt, and awash in sweet romance, Bobbins and Boots captures the tender and tumultuous emotions of falling in love. Hi, Shanna! I’m so excited about your newest release, BOBBINS AND BOOTS. It’s the next book I read and I can’t wait to get started.
I’m so excited to join you on your blog today. Thank you for inviting me to visit! If there’s one thing you hope readers come away with after reading your book, what would it be? Shanna: Hope. I think that is one clear, consistent message readers can find in all of my books. Never lose hope. If there was one place you could go to research a book, where would it be? Shanna: Ireland. I’ve always wanted to visit there. A research trip there would be fantastic! Oh, that would be fun! It always looks so beautiful there. What do you usually use when you’re writing? A computer? Paper and pen? Shanna: Definitely a computer. If I had to write with pen and paper, I’d probably get one book completed a year instead of several. Tell us about one of your hobbies. Shanna: I really enjoy dabbling in photography. I’m a point-and-shoot kinda girl, but sometimes, the sunrises and sunsets streaming in my office windows draws me outside to snap a photo or two. It’s just something I do for fun, but it does bring me a lot of joy. I think that's great you enjoy photography and just do it for fun. It sounds like you've got a beautiful location for taking photos. Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Shanna: Definitely an introvert. I was so shy as a little girl, it was painful for me to make eye contact with people, let alone talk to them. I can now speak in public and enjoy meeting new people, but at the end of the day, I’m without a doubt an introvert. If time and money were not a concern, what one skill would you like to learn? Shanna: I would love to learn to play the harp! Crazy, right! I’ve just always thought the music so haunting and elegant and beautiful. I never would have thought to learn to play the harp. The music really is very pretty! What project are you working on now? Shanna: The next book in the Pendleton Petticoats series. I’m doing a big cover reveal April 6 at the Petticoat Ball! What inspired the cover for your latest book? Shanna: Oh, this is a fun one! The other books in this series only feature an image of the heroine of the story, so for this one, I wanted both the heroine and the hero to be on the cover. I also wanted to include lace, since that is tied to the story. I asked my niece if she’d be willing to pose for me and thankfully, she not only agreed, but talked her friend into posing, too. We did the photo shoot on a rainy afternoon, but I’m really happy with the way it turned out. I love that your niece was willing to pose for you and even convinced her friend to do so as well! I always look forward to seeing your next cover and this is one of my favorites - it came out beautifully! Thanks again for joining us and congratulations again on your latest release. I’ve enjoyed chatting with you, my friend! Shanna: Many, thanks to you, Melanie, for hosting me today. I so appreciate it!

I am excited to have Alexis as my guest on the blog today. Alexis A. Goring is a passionate writer with a degree in Print Journalism and an MFA in Creative Writing. She loves the art of storytelling and hopes that her stories will connect readers with the enduring, forever love of Jesus Christ. Her latest book, A Second Chance, came out January 25th. Newly single food critic and newspaper reporter Traci Hightower is done with dating. After the man of her dreams left her at the altar on their wedding day and ran off with the woman she thought was her best friend, Traci resolves to focus on work and resigns herself to being a bachelorette for life. Marc Roberts is a political reporter who is known as Mr. Nice Guy, the one who always finishes last. However, Marc’s compassion and kindness is of invaluable help to his newly widowed sister Gina Braxton who is trying to raise her two kids in the wake of her firefighter husband’s death. Traci and Marc may be the perfect match, but they don’t know it yet. With God’s guidance and the help of Gina’s matchmaking skills honed by her career as a bestselling romance novelist, there is hope for a happily ever after for these two broken hearts. Hi, Alexis! Thank you so much for joining us today. I see that you had a new release in January. A SECOND CHANCE sounds like a great book and the cover is just beautiful! Tell us a little about yourself.
What is one of the most challenging things you’ve faced as an author? Alexis: One of the most challenging things I’ve faced as an author is pressing on and moving forward in writing more fictional stories when there’s so much trauma and drama going on in the real world. What is your favorite thing about being an author? Alexis: My favorite thing about being an author is creating fictional characters in fictional story settings and writing their fictional life stories. Lol. I love being able to express my creativity and heart through my characters. It’s an adventure every time I start a new story because I’m a pantser so I never know where the story may take me. However, since my second book, I have become a bit of a plotter. Nowadays, before I start to write a story, I always get to know my characters now by filling out GMC (Goal/Motivation/Conflict) charts that identify their emotional, spiritual and physical desires. I credit my editor Liz Tolsma for teaching me this skill. Mastering the GMC for my main characters helps me to create a more solid story because I know the characters inside and out. Melanie: I'm a pantser myself, so I definitely get what you mean about never knowing where a story may take you. I think that's half the fun! What is your least favorite thing about being an author? Alexis: My least favorite thing about being an author is having writer’s block! Melanie: Oh, yes. Writer's block can be so hard to get through at times! If there was one place you could go to research a book, where would it be? Alexis: I’d love to go to Paris, France to research a book because I’ve always loved romantic cities and that is definitely one! I’d like to stroll down the cobblestone streets, eat authentic French bread in the fancy little cafes, enjoy dinner at the restaurant in the Eiffel Tower and take photos of everything I experience there—the food, fashion, scenery, people, etc. While I’m in Europe, I’d also like to visit London (England) and Spain. I’d love to connect with fellow creative people (writers/photographers/chefs) and explore the culture through the arts, especially the culinary arts! ;) One more note about this: While in London, I’d like to research The Goring Hotel. It’s a five-star luxury hotel where Princess Kate Middleton spent her last night as a single lady with her bridal party before the morning of her Royal Wedding. Exciting, isn’t it? I know there’s a story there that I may be connected to, and I want to discover it. Melanie: That all sounds wonderful. I hope you'll get to go on an adventure like that sometime in the future. It would definitely be one you'd never forget. If time and money were not a concern, what one skill would you like to learn? Alexis: I’d love to learn how to sing professionally! Music is my love language. When I was growing up, I would choose to buy a new CD over new clothes and snacks with my allowance. As an adult, eating good food wins over buying new music (like, every time) but I still do love the art of song! Melanie: How awesome! I love to sing, though it would take a miracle for me to sing professionally. lol What project are you working on now? Alexis: I’m working on a story about a fictional five-star quality bakery in the heart of a major city and the main characters that love it. Melanie: That sounds like a great setting for a new story! Thanks again for joining us, Alexis. I’ve enjoyed chatting with you today! Alexis: You’re welcome. Thanks for interviewing me and hosting me on your blog! |
